For over 800 years, Smithfield Meat Market and Billingsgate Fish Market have been at the heart of feeding London. However, a new chapter begins as the City of London Corporation’s Common Council has decided to close these historic markets. Alongside this, the Corporation has cancelled the relocation of the markets to a new site at Dagenham Dock.
This Website is dedicated to the fighting this decision that destroys these treasures of British heritage and undermines the livelihoods of market traders and the businesses and communities they serve.
On hearing news of the closure of Smithfield Market, concerned citizens immediately launched a petition on Change.org. Our aim is to acheive 100,000 signatures in order to have this decision and the future of Smithfield Market debated in Parliament. Within days the peition reached 16,000 signatures and today it is approaching 30,000. Join and and Save Smithfield Market.

Here we show some of the hundreds of comments from people who have signed the petition on Change.org to save Smithfield. We hope they are listened to.
"It will be tragic if it closes. Why are our authorities destroying our capital and deleting our history?"
“Smithfield’s is historically the meat market for the last 800 years. Provides a better place for markets, visitors and customers making it famous. It affects the farmers most as they lose out on that market and additional costs. Dispersal of these will mean less choice.”
Anne, Binegar, UK
"Please, please do not get rid of Smithfield Market. It was bad enough losing Covent Garden. Are we to lose everything which made London a memorable capital city we could be proud of?"
